How do we understand God’s commandment to “utterly destroy” the people of Canaan? He instructed the king of Israel to “completely destroy the entire Amalekite nation—men, women, children, babies, cattle, sheep, goats, camels, and donkeys”. How could this possibly be compatible with the God, who is loving and compassionate to all people?
