What is it anyway?

Biblical Christianity boils down to this main theme:

God created us, we rebelled against Him

this rebellion separated us from God for ever

we need to be saved from this rebellious state

we cannot solve it by ourselves

Jesus Christ stepped in and sacrificed His own state of perfection and took upon Himself our imperfection

Trust in Him as our Saviour is the only way to redeem ourselves with God the Creator

So yes, Christians talk a lot about sin! Sin is like missing the goal, or in other
words: Falling short of God’s requirements. Sin is the opposite
from all that is right and it is mostly an act of wilful disobedience
to God… Hence, my short summery in which I talk about rebellion.

The Bible explains sin in the following terms:

A burden too heavy for us to carry

A chain that binds us

Like un-washable dirt

Like a debt we owe to God

A disease without a proper cure

I will come back to this list later.

Let me help you discover what sin is more.

Galatians 5: 19b-21

“19 … sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality (total irresponsibility,
lack of self-control), 20idolatry, sorcery, hostility,
strife, jealousy, fits of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions
[that promote heresies], 21envy, drunkenness, riotous
behaviour, and other things like these. I warn you beforehand, just
as I did previously, that those who practice such things will not
inherit the kingdom of God.”

You’ll find a link to the whole list in the description of this video.

Well, that sounds
serious, doesn’t it? And that’s because it is!! Our deeds have
consequences. Maybe not directly visible right now but for sure in
the future. None of us can say that we are not guilty. Even if you
are only guilty of one of these aforementioned things, you are still
not perfect enough to come close to God.

This is exactly the reason Jesus came to rescue us. Jesus, de Son of God, lived a perfect
life. He did not deserve to die or to be punished. That made Him the
perfect person to carry the punishment of others. That’s what He
did. Jesus died and took all the sin of the world with him.

Back to the first list.

Our heavy burden can be removed

Jesus broke the chain

Jesus washes away the dirt

Jesus paid the debt

And finally the disease, called sin, can be cured by Him.

The only thing we can do is say: Thank you, Lord! I will follow You from now on.

A last anecdote.

I have worked in a
bakery for years. I had the responsibility over several bakers. One
of them forgot to empty the oven. 200+ loafs of bread were burned.
Obviously the boss was furious! He roared while he was bashing into
the bakery. What to do?? My colleague was afraid and jumped literally
away into the other room. I stopped my boss in his path. I told him
that I was terribly sorry. He said: But you didn’t do anything!!
Nope, he was right. However, I took the responsibility. Later, my
colleague asked me what to do. I told him to get back to work, and to
accept that the case was closed. He accepted and that was that.

I know, no anecdote is perfect but this is what Jesus did.

He took the responsibility and you can choose. Either you say:

“Nope, I am brave enough to take the punishment.” Which means you’ll have
to face judgement only to find out that you are guilty and cannot pay
the fine in any way.

Or, you accept Jesus’ offer and you’ll be safe when you face the Judge.

It is your decision!

Silly Christian, you always talk about sin!
